Video opacity

Not sure if I am missing something, but whenever I overlay two video image players, the results are always a 50/50 mix of the two. The dimmer control, which I thought would control the opacity is set to full at 1%. Is there any way to force a clip so it has no opacity when sitting over another clip?

in fact, the crossfader is 0 to 1
0.5 gives you 50%
