Hiya... so i'm getting the hang of Usine and really liking it.

I'm wondering where to start with the add-ons? What are the must-haves in your opinion?

While I can't recommend any specifics (I'm too new to Usine myself), I suggest you choose using the category.

Synths, groove makers and sampling tools, for when you are looking for inspiration, and midi and data tools, and synchro time when you are interested in learning how to build something.

The others category is a great grab bag of both types. I go there when I can't decide if I want to build, or to play.
Regards,

Scott

It really depends what you want to do with uisine...

The must haves for me are
PatcherKit and Synthesis pack v2.0 (both in 50 latest add-ons)

They always can be useful. The synthesis pack, since usine doesn't offer an oscillator and the patcher kit with all the little helpers.
Study them to see elegant solutions of little problems. You can learn the way how to think, when patching.

And also its hard work to study all the ptaches coming witch usine.

And if you wanna go further. Choose a category, download and try out :-)

Thanks for the reply percuson. I have both of those and will explore. Patching is definately what i'm looking for.
Happy that I can take my time to reveal the potential as i'm not in any hurry to learn how to use it for teaching or performance (yet).

Hi secretkillerofnames,

what I did to learn patching, was to install Pd-extended and check out the tutorial patches in doc/ 3.audio.examples.
I tried to rebuild some interesting ones in Usine.

There is also a tutorial for Pure Data on link:Programming Electronic Music in Pd
Pure Data is much more complicated, because the inlets and outlets aren't labeled and you don't have "ready to use" modules inside.
But the tutorial is quite good to learn about the basics of audio processing and patching.
Sometimes you have to go a different way to get a solution in Usine, but (almost) everything is possible

I have a friend I've worked with who is into Pure Data. I've found Max6 much easier to get into though and have recently started macro patching in Reaktor. Each system has its own approach though but i'm getting there. For example I had to work out how to separate midi-channels so that I can use Noatikl algorithmic midi generator to send to different instruments. Now I have a nice sub-patch. :D

You're right, Max is much easier than PD, but PD is free and they have much in common. I never tried Reaktor...
As I can see, you already have some experience with patching, so it should be no problem to go ahead within Usine.
Have fun!

Yes indeed. Patching is why i'm drawn to Usine. Feels like a midpoint between Reaktor and Max/MSP at the moment which is exactly what I want.
